Top 5 books I read in January

January Round Up! Here’s a list of the top 5 books I read this month! This isn’t in any order because I can’t rate the different genres 🙂

FURIA by Yamile Saied Méndez

A rising soccer player in Argentina named Camila puts everything on the line to follow her dreams. In this book you follow her home life where she lives in the shadows of her older brother, the “super star” child. You fall in love with Diego, an international fútbol player, that can’t keep away from Camila.

On the soccer field she’s known as La Furia but at home she has to hide her passion for soccer from her family.

Will she be able to bring her two lives together and make her dreams come true?

FIVE STARS. I binge read this book. There was so much female empowerment. I really loved the way that the author makes you feel like you’re really living her life. She does an amazing job at putting you in Camila’s cleats. There was just enough sports, romance, family life and facts about Argentina to keep everything moving and not overwhelming. I absolutely loved this book.

JUST MERCY by Bryan Stevenson

A lawyer in Alabama dedicates his career to defending people who are on death row.

The book is composed of one big story (the case of Walter McMillian) but weaved beautifully in between this story are multiple short stories of many other wrongly convicted men and women.

There are tons of jaw-dropping facts and enough story telling that keeps the book rolling and the reader looped in.

FIVE STARS. I truly believe that every single person should read this book. Definitely way out of my comfort zone and not a book that I would typically pick up but there were so many stories that it kept my attention the whole time. Although the book is meant to be factual it didn’t feel like he was just spitting facts at me. I think Bryan Stevenson does AMAZING work and reading about it truly inspired me and opened my eyes to all the injustice happening in our criminal system.

THE GUEST LIST by Lucy Foley

6 people’s perspectives. 6 pasts’ that haunt them. Two highly public figures spend the weekend on a small Ireland in Ireland to hide their wedding from the paparazzi. They invite all their family and friends’ to join them for the ceremony. From the outside it’s a perfect night. But deep within each person is a story that’s anything but perfect.

What could a bride, the groom, a plus one, the best man, the wedding planner and a bridesmaid all have in common?

The truth doesn’t come out until a body is found.

FIVE STARS. The book is very detail oriented in the beginning which made it pretty slow but you understand in the end why all the time was taken and how each detail is important. This book was VERY chilling and VERY unexpected. I loved that each chapter is a continuation of what’s going on but from a different person’s perspective. 100000000% did not see the ending coming and is the very definition of a thriller.

UNTAMED by Glennon Doyle

Glennon Doyle’s “most revealing and powerful” memoir yet. This memoir explores the peace that can be found when you stop striving to meet expectations that are pre-set for you and start trusting the voice within.

She talks about being LGBTQ, divorcing, marriage, motherhood, expectations of a young woman and a young man in today’s society, doing hard things and so so so much more.

Each chapter is a short story that compiles into a big picture.

SIX STARS. Yes I gave it six out of five stars. I already bought this book hard copy and sent a copy to my sister to read. It’s the perfect book to pick up and read a chapter here and there. Glennon talks about a lot that I cannot personally apply to my life but she makes it very relatable. I mostly listened to this book on audible – Glennon is an inspirational speaker as well and she was the one who read the memoir. I loved learning about her life through her voice. This book is by far my favorite memoir I’ve ever read. There were so many times I was baffled by her perspective and she really changed the way I thought about so much.

THE STOPOVER by TL Swan

Emily gets upgraded to a first class seat where she’s seated next to Jameson. Champagne, food and a sexy man – it all seemed like a dream until they were rerouted to Boston for a stopover. One thing led to another and let’s just say it was a night that Emily would never forget.

A full year passes and Emily never heard from Jameson. Life got in the way and Emily took on more responsibilities.

It was all status quo until Emily lands her her dream job where the CEO is none other than Jameson. Suddenly it seems that neither of them actually forgot their stopover in Boston.

FIVE STARS. I absolutely loved this book and fell in love with Emily and Jameson’s characters. The book moved so quickly and was such an easy read. Sauce level is SPICY (if you know what I mean) lol. I really loved all the character development that Emily goes through. Overall great book if you just wanna read something quickly.

How I Read For Free

There’s no surprise that I love to read. However, reading can get very expensive. Especially when you’re reading 10+ books a month. I’ve found 2 ways that allow me to read for free or for a small fee a month. I figured I’d share in hopes that this helps some people overcome the “it’s too expensive” part of reading.

THE APP “LIBBY” AND A LIBRARY CARD

LEARNING ABOUT THIS WAS A GAME CHANGER. Before my friend Taylor showed me this I was buying all of my books on amazon and with each book the cost was adding up. It’s so simple. You find the closest library for your county / city. Go on their website and apply for a library card. For my city’s library – they have a link to “Apply for Library Card”. It looks something like this.

Right now because of COVID it’s all done online. You prove that you live in the city you’re living in and they will email you your library card number. Once you have that library card number you download the app Libby (it’s free) and looks like this.

Once the app is downloaded you open the app and you “add a library” – using your library card number. They have a very wide range of e-books and this allows you to browse them and download the books straight from the library to your kindle. Most rentals are 14 days! If there’s a book that has multiple people waiting you can join the wait list and it will appear when it’s ready to borrow.

This app has saved me HUNDREDS of dollars and is so easily compatible with my kindle! It has all the best sellers and books you can imagine! I would highly recommend!

KINDLE UNLIMITED

The second way that I read is through my kindle unlimited subscription. I pay $9.99/month and just add it to my amazon account. If you have a kindle I’d recommend it only if you are interested in reading books that aren’t best sellers. They have a lot of the “steamy romance novels” that I enjoy reading! It’s really easy to set up and they have a 30 day free trial. It’s a pretty small “library” to borrow from but they have a lot of good ones that Libby doesn’t have. I use both in order to have a more expansive library.

I hope these two sources help guide you in your reading and help cut down the cost of reading books!

Side note: If you want to read hard copy books – once you have a library card you can borrow pretty much any book and pick them up curbside!

Ten Must Haves For Dog Owners

The title says it all. Here are 10 things I believe all dog owners should know about / have if you have a dog [or two ;)].

THIS HAS SAVED MY LIFE. Both of my goldens shed, A LOT. And this only weighs S-I-X pounds! It’s so easy to whip it around and when you have to vacuum every day, like me, you appreciate the fact that it’s cordless and so light weight. It’s pricey but so worth the investment.

The most under utilized tool for my shedders. We run this over out pups outside about once a month. It gets deep down (without irritating their skin) and gets all the loose hair off and into the brush. Better to be off and in the trash then on my floors 🙂

This might seem silly but any folder will do. Having all of Charlie’s vet records in one folder and all of Berkeley’s in another has kept us so organized. It’s beyond nice to have all of their vaccination records, microchip information, and insurance information all in one place. That way when you take him to the sitter’s or god forbid in emergency – everything is in one place.

I WISH I would have known that this existed in Bloomington. The days of Charlie coming into the house with muddy paws have come to an end. You fill this up with water, a little bit of dog shampoo and shove their paw in and out. It’s as simple as that. The silicone bristles on the inside are able to break the mud down and really get the paw clean. It’s a game changer.

Another thing that might seem silly and obvious but it’s something I never thought about before I had dogs. Having a set of designated towels that can get muddy and wet and can easily be washed over and over is a huge plus. Having a few old beach towels in the closet that can go in the car when you go to the state park and know the pups will get wet are a must.

Amazon essentials lol. We raised Charlie in a little studio apartment downtown Bloomington which meant every time he went outside we carried this little poop carrier with us. Every dog owner knows about poop bags but the sheer amount of bags for the price is unreal. Whether your dog is a city dog or the occasional dog park go-er it’s nice to have a supply of baggies.

This is magic in a bottle. From puppy pee accidents, stomach bug puke or muddy paw prints – this gets it all out. This is our first apartment with carpet and it really removes the stain and the color almost instantly. I’ve been through a full bottle already and already stocked up a couple more bottles.

Not a want – a need. This has SAVED my leather seats. Just by having this car seat cover, they aren’t scratching my seats and the dog hair is kept all in the cover. It also helps because Charlie loves to crawl up into the front seat and this cover doesn’t allow it. Safer for the pups and the driver!

When quarantine hit we decided to sign up for BarkBox. Treats and toys delivered to my front door every month sounded like heaven. 7 months in and every time we get a box we’re more and more impressed. Normally we get 3 toys, 2 bags of treats and a bully stick – all for MUCH less then you would spend at Petsmart or Petco.

P.S. If you use the link through the picture you’ll get your first month free using my referral code!

Yes they’re just dogs but if you’re like me you get a little sad when you have to leave them. Having a Furbo gives me A LOT of peace of mind. I can just quickly check in – make sure Charlie’s still snoozing on the couch and make sure Berke hasn’t escaped his kennel and then go on with whatever I’m doing. The bonuses of being able to throw a treat, get notified when they bark or move around and have recordings throughout the day stored in one place are all cherries on top.

I sincerely hope this little list of “must haves” help and I hope you found a product that could help save your sanity with your pups 🙂

sephora sale for the non-beauty guru

I’m no beauty guru and for the longest time I didn’t even shop at Sephora. Only recently did I start which makes this my first spring sephora sale! Depending on the amount of rewards you have acquired from past purchases, you get anywhere from 10-20% off you order!

I figured I’d share my some of my favorite products from Sephora that I’ve tried and recommend. Then I thought I’d name a few products that I’ve been eyeing for a while. This sale makes it the perfect time to try out some new products.

Every product I mention is tagged so click the name and it will take you to the Sephora website! ❤

PRODUCTS I LOVE/RECOMMEND:

Olaplex No. 3 and No. 4: I love this set of shampoo/conditioner. If you are a blonde and get your hair colored often this set is the one for you! It leaves my hair feeling so soft and full. I know it’s expensive but it’s well worth the money!

Briogeo Deep Conditioning Mask: This is my holy grail right now. I’ve been struggling with dry scalp and my hair has been so frizzy. I use this about once a week and it’s a game changer. I can’t recommend this product enough.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: This mask leaves your lips feeling so soft. I use this every night and I wake up without chapped lips. It’s the perfect way to end your night time routine!

Hoola Bronzer: This product is so popular and I only recently purchased it. I love that it leaves such a natural bronze. It’s not too dark and it blends very well!

Sol De Janero Shower Cream Gel: This shower gel came in a package I received as a trial size and I’ve since purchased the full size. It makes my skin so soft and actually feels like butter. The smell is so good and intoxicating.

It Cosmetics CC Cream: This is the best foundation! It doesn’t feel cakey when it goes on and still gives you a full coverage look. I’m in between two shades so I mix them and it works great for me!

Fresh Soy Cleanser: This is my favorite cleanser. It’s so gentle and doesn’t dry me out! It’s so great at getting the left over makeup off!

Mario Badescu Lip Balm: I have about 10 of these laying throughout the house/in my purse/bag/car… you get it. This is my go-to lip balm and it’s cheap too! I’m definitely going to stocking up!

PRODUCTS IN MY CART:

Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation: A couple weeks ago I asked on IG for foundation recommendations and this was the top pick! A lot of y’all recommended it so I wanna try it out!

Pillow Talk Lipstick & Liner: I’m not normally one to wear lipliner or lipstick but this color is right up my alley. It’s also the mini size so I can try it out and if I don’t like it I didn’t spend too much or waste too much product.

DryBar Prep Rally Prime & Prep Detangler: My hair is naturally curly/wavy so every time I shower and have to brush it out, I. STRUGGLE. My hair always gets to knotted up and tangly. I’m hoping this product helps.

Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder: It’s almost summer which means my face is about to get way oil-ier. This powder is so popular and I think it will help blur out the oil.

Tarte Eyeshadow Palette: I always wear pretty natural/subtle colors on my eyes so this palette seemed perfect! I also love love the two dark brown colors on the very right side of the palette because I want to try and draw on my eye liner using powder.

OleHenriksen Banana Bright Eye Créme: All this quarantine stress has my eyes looking DARK. Not even my concealer can hide it so I’m hoping this will brighten up my dark circles!

Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer: Julia Havens, a blogger I follow, raves about this concealer. It always looks so creamy and blends really well!

Briogeo Strengthening Treatment Hair Oil: I love love this brand and the deep conditioning mask has done wonders. I think this oil will help with frizz as well as keep the ends of my hair replenished!

Ouai Leave-In Conditioner: I’m basically willing to try anything to help my frizz and make my hair more manageable. Plus this brand has a lot of good reviews!

I’m in no shape or form any good at make-up or an expert by any means but I really love trying out new products and experimenting! I hope that this helps some of y’all non-beauty gurus like me 🙂 If there are any products you love and think I need to try please let me know!!

MY FIRST BLOG

Last December I went through and made a list of goals for the year 2020. Some things included being more economically friendly and working on my Spanish. At the top of my list however was to start a blog. I’ve lacked creativity and I know the feeling is widespread especially during a pandemic. I’ve found it’s very easy to fall into a routine; eat, work, workout, sleep, repeat. So this is me, trying to get creative and step outside of my box.

I plan to share things that I love, talk about things that weigh heavy on my heart and just write out what’s on my mind.

I hope this blog finds you in a good place and that during this time you find comfort, peace and health.
